Anemia

Anemia, hematologic disorders can be caused by impaired development/functioning of one of the three main blood cells:

Red blood cells or erythrocytes - carry oxygen to the body's tissues by specialized oxygen binding protein – hemoglobin.

White blood cells - fight infections.

Platelets - help blood to clot.

In case of healthy red blood cells (hemoglobin) deficiency tissues suffer from the lack of oxygen. A person with anemia has relevant set of symptoms: difficulty breathing, dizziness, pale skin, poor appetite, weight loss, cravings for non-nutritive substances, uncomfortable tingling/crawling feeling in legs, jaundice.

Any of these anemia symptoms are used by application for initiation of Anemia health risk model. Combination of symptoms also depends on the anemia reasons that can be caused by blood loss, destruction of erythrocytes (hemolysis) or insufficient production and/or development of red blood cells in bone marrow.

Following lab test are suggested to assess risk of anemia:

RBC (Erythrocytes) - quantity of red blood cells (erythrocytes) in the blood

HGB - protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen to the tissues

MCV - Mean corpuscular volume shows average red blood cell size

RDW - Red cell distribution width calculates variations in size of red blood cells

HCT - Hematocrit test indicates percentage volume of red blood cells in whole blood

MCH - average mass of hemoglobin per red blood cell

MCHC - calculated value derived from the measurement of hemoglobin and the hematocrit

Anemia may be a result of bone marrow disorder when by any reason bone marrow does not produce sufficient amount of healthy blood cells. Besides erythrocytes white blood cells and platelets production also can be affected by certain conditions such as intoxication, infection, certain types of cancer, medications etc.

Despite different etiology bone marrow dysfunctions has common group of symptoms besides anemia symptoms, which also can be caused by bone marrow dysfunction: dizziness, pale skin, poor appetite, weight loss, cravings for non-nutritive substances, bone pain, joint pain, night sweats, slow-healing infections, shortness of breath, uncomfortable tingling/crawling feeling in legs, easy or excessive bruising, unusually heavy menstrual flows, prolonged bleeding.

If an individual mentions any of these symptoms system runs either anemia or both anemia and bone marrow dysfunctions model. If model for bone marrow dysfunctions is activated, the following lab tests are recommended:

Neutrophils %,Neutrophils #, Lymphocytes, WBC - white blood cells that provides protection against diseases and infections by destroying some types of bacteria and other cells

Platelets - produced in the bone marrow, prevent bleeding by forming blood clots and help wounds heal

RBC - red blood cells (erythrocytes) that transport oxygen to tissues

All available data is processed to estimate risk of certain health conditions. Simultaneously the system provides accuracy level of this estimation; the less numbers are entered – the lower would be the accuracy.
